Many patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) have racing thoughts that often go unrecognized, and this symptom is associated with more severe depression. 2 Those with a DSM-5 diagnosis of MDD with mixed features could experience prolonged racing thoughts during a major depressive episode. 1 Untreated racing thoughts may explain why many patients with MDD do not improve with an antidepressant alone. 3 These patients might benefit from augmentation with a mood stabilizer such as lithium ...

There are alot of different meds that are helpful for bipolar disorder. What works for one may not work for another. There is alot of trial and error involved in finding one, or a combination of meds that works for an individual. The ativan will probably be helpful with the racing thoughts until your appointment.

Racing thoughts are, of course, standard to bipolar mania or hypomania and a fairly common experience for people with bipolar. Racing thoughts are not, de facto, disturbing and might even be creative or useful. (And none of this speaks to delusional thoughts which are a whole other beastie.) Thought About Thought

Racing thoughts in people with ADHD tend to be rapid, unstable thoughts which do not follow any sort of pattern, similar to racing thoughts in people with bipolar disorder. Medications used to treat ADHD, such as Adderall or Methylphenidate , can be prescribed to patients with ADHD to calm these racing thoughts, [14] most commonly in the morning when people wake up but just as well in the evening before sleep .

The third study, published in 2008, didn't look specifically at bipolar disorder and gluten; instead, it looked at a broad array of psychiatric conditions, including bipolar disorder, and whether they were more likely to occur in children with celiac disease or with positive celiac blood tests. The study found neurological or psychiatric problems in nearly 2% of children with celiac or gluten sensitivity, a rate slightly higher than the 1.1% found in control subjects.

Turns out part of the issue was low testosterone which my primary doc helped with by giving me a gel. My shrink stated that he thought I did also have a mood disorder, not bipolar, and he added Lamictal. I did fine on 50 mg, but after 5 weeks on 100 mg, I started to feel anxiety again, but this time with racing thoughts and some intrusive ones.
