Odds are the return you can expect to get if the horse you bet on is successful. It reflects the amount of money bet on a horse; the more money that is invested, the shorter the odds. When horse racing odds are shown in the form of 7-2, 5-1, etc, it expresses the amount of profit to the amount invested.

If you see fractional odds the other way round – such as 1/4 – this is called odds-on and means the horse in question is a hot favourite to win the race. In spoken form this is “Four-to-one on”.

With horse racing odds, the first number (the numerator) shows how many units you stand to win, and the second number (the denominator) shows how many units you must risk to win that much. For example: 10-1 odds: You will win 10 units for every 1 unit wagered. 7-2 odds: You will win 7 units for every 2 units wagered.

What Are Horse Racing Odds Odds are simply the way prices and payouts are shown at a horse track. The numbers displayed as 4-7 or 2-5 tell you what you pay and how much you get back if the horse you bet on wins. The first number tells you how much you could win, the second number is the amount you bet.

Horse racing odds are determined using a formula that takes into account the total amount of money that has been bet on a race, the amount that has been bet on each horse and the percentage of the money that the track or off-track betting site keeps.

Bookmakers’ odds give an estimate of the probability of, say, a horse winning a particular race. And if they were reliable, around 50 per cent of horses with even odds would win their races, around 33 per cent of those with odds of 2-1, and so on, right down to just 1 per cent of ‘long shots’ with odds of 100-1. What does a 4/5 odds mean?

If you have a reasonable degree of understanding about odds and betting, our job here is very simple: odds on simply means that the odds for a given selection are shorter than evens. So if a horse is even money, it is not odds on. If it is 2/1, it is not odds on.

The OR is designed specifically to help handicappers work out the weight a horse must carry during a race — and this can affect the horse racing betting odds. Horses with roughly the same ratings will be placed together in a race, but those with a lower rating will earn a one-pound reduction to their weight for every rating point they lack.

If you notice that your heart works faster, the first thing you...
